Straylining with pilchards worked well early in the month and towards the end of the month we fished with softbaits a lot with some good results. Snapper being the main catch and the occasional John Dory which are a welcome addition to the chilly bin.
Strong winds and rough seas limited our fishing time this month but the days we did get out the Snapper fishing was good with straylining baits in the shallows producing plenty of fish.
Its been a good month fishing out deep and in the shallows with some good catches of Snapper, Kingfish and Bluenose. Slow jigs have been fishing well, orange being the favourite colour!
With some more great weather forecasts this month we ventured back out chasing deepwater species. It was all worth while with anglers catching Bluenose and Bass for the first time and Tarakihi again being a welcome bi-catch.
Only a couple days this month was spent targeting snapper. No big moocher snapper were caught but there was plenty of nice snapper up to 10lb were landed which are the best eating size.
With some nice 10 knot variables this month we got out into some deep water targeting Bluenose, Bass and Tarakihi. There were some nice Bluenose up to 18kgs landed with the odd little Bass being caught aswell. A bi-catch of Tarakihi was a bonus with the occasional Gemfish also coming out of the depths.
Snapper fishing for the month was also good with one day producing numerous snapper between 10-20lb for one lucky angler!
We weren’t able to get out on the water during March as we were busy fitting out our new boat ‘Relentless’ but by the middle of April we were back out on the water. We only managed to get out on the water a couple of days but on those days the snapper fishing was hot with lots of fish up around the 15-20lb mark!
Plenty of big Snapper around this month, with many of them being around the 10-20lb mark. Softbaits and Slow jigs have been fishing well with the odd kingfish striking them which makes for a good battle on the light gear.
Managed to get out for a day trolling lures for Tuna and Striped Marlin. Plenty of Skipjack tuna were caught through the day and we hooked into a sizeable Striped Marlin but unfortunately pulled the hooks at the side of the boat after a 40 minute battle.
